The esthetical layout for Bridges – after a design by the French interior architect Sybille de Margerie – got its inspiration from the coloration and shapes of the 1949 mural ‘Questioning Children’ by COBRA-artist Karel Appel. You can still admire this painting at the entrance of the restaurant.

Questioning Children (Vragende Kinderen) (Karel Appel) [wiki]
Karel Appel, Questioning Children, 1949, fresco
A colorful but somber composition of several big, dull planes in which the contours of starving children are created with bold black strokes. That is the mural that COBRA-artist Appel was commissioned for by the city of Amsterdam for the canteen of the former city hall. Appel was inspired by seeing starving children in post-war Germany on a trip to Kopenhagen. The civil servants that frequented the canteen objected to the coloration and the forms, so the mural was hidden behind a partition in 1949. It stayed there for ten years. Now, it is considered one of the masterpieces of the former city hall.
